The Vasnetsov Foundation, together with the Abramtsevo Museum-Reserve, with the support of the Russian Orthodox Church, has prepared a unique exhibition dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of the artist V.M. Vasnetsov
The exhibition will be held in July-August 2018 at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. For the first time, the little-known pages of the work of a beloved and well-known artist to the people of Russia are so widely revealed and illuminated.
The materials of the exhibition tell about the very first architectural project of V. M. Vasnetsov, when, according to him, he "felt the joy of architectural creativity." In the summer of 1881, Vasnetsov in Abramtsevo, together with V. D. Polenov, completed the project of the Church of the Image of the Savior Not Made with Hands, in the construction of which the artists were directly involved. The materials of the exhibition — the design of the temple, sketches of the iconostasis, banners, shrouds, etc. — help to present the ideas of the artists, which have almost all been implemented. A small manor church played a huge role in the birth of a great style — it is the Abramtsevskaya Church that stands at the origins of modernity.
From Abramtsev, V. M. Vasnetsov went to Kiev. Here, in the "mother of Russian cities", he led the work on the painting of the Vladimir Cathedral. Unique photographs of the cathedral's interiors, made at the very end of the nineteenth century, will tell about this work of the artist at the exhibition.
The exhibition is also intended to give impetus to the holding in 2018-2019 of a continental traveling exhibition dedicated to the 170th anniversary of V. M. Vasnetsov, in foreign church centers in Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australia.
