Continental traveling exhibition of works by V.M. Vasnetsov dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the artist's birth

PRESS RELEASE

The Vasnetsov Foundation, together with the Abramtsevo Museum-Reserve, with the support of the Russian Orthodox Church, has prepared a continental traveling exhibition dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of the artist V.M. Vasnetsov. For the first time, the exhibition reveals and highlights the little-known pages of the work of this beloved and well-known artist to the people of Russia.

Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov is a man who made a special contribution to the culture of Russia, made a bright religious and patriotic trend in Russian art at the turn of the century. He searched and found his image of Holy Russia, its great history and deep faith. Icons and paintings of churches created by V.M. Vasnetsov at the end of the XIX century became a new standard of Russian temple art. His icon designs were distributed throughout the Russian Empire and beyond. The general theme of his work was the glorification of the Russian land, as evidenced by the painted icons and painted temples abroad of our Homeland.

The materials of the exhibition tell about the very first architectural project of V. M. Vasnetsov, namely the Church of the Image of the Savior Not Made with Hands in Abramtsevo. The exhibition also presents unique photographs of the interiors of St. Vladimir's Cathedral in Kiev, the work on the painting of which was headed by V.M. Vasnetsov. The photographs were taken in the 1890s by order of the philanthropist S.I. Mamontov.

The exhibition will include materials with more than 130 years of history: temple designs, sketches of the cathedral, iconostasis, banners, shrouds, historical photographs, etc.

The exhibition is held in 2 stages:

The 1st stage was held in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in July-August 2018.

Stage 2 — a traveling exhibition on foreign churches in 2018 – 2019..

The Foundation has developed and is implementing a project for holding a continental exhibition in 2018-2019. Events will be held in the largest Orthodox churches and monasteries on all continents: in Europe, Asia, America, Australia, Africa.

As the continental exhibition continues, its exposition will expand, it will include not only the works of V.M. Vasnetsov, but also other religious artists: Polenov, Nesterov, etc.

This project is aimed at spreading Russian culture both in Russia and abroad, at attracting a new audience interested in the culture of the XIX-XX centuries, for further interaction.

The Vasnetsov Foundation invites partners who are interested in the culture of Russia of the Silver Age to organize and conduct traveling exhibitions. Partners can accompany the exhibition in the countries of its holding. During the events, an advertising campaign of the partner organization may be held, and the media will also be involved. If desired, an exhibition of the partner company's products and meetings with the business environment in the countries of the exhibitions will be organized.
